Message from the President

NMSDC President As we entered 2014, NMSDC achieved a major milestone in its Strategic Plan: the completion of the network restructuring process that reshapes the network from 36 affiliate regional councils to 24. This restructuring is central to our goal of creating a more efficient, effective network to support and engage our 1,750 corporate members and nearly 13, 000 certified minority business enterprises (MBEs). As the network restructuring was underway, we began work on a dynamic vendor and certification management system that will replace MBISYS – our current minority supplier database. Implementation of the new database in first quarter 2014 will position the organization to create a fully-integrated enterprise network that seamlessly links the national office and the affiliate network. This new single-platform system will also provide more effective connection points between the NMSDC network and our collective constituents.

To tie it all together, NMSDC launched a branding campaign in September 2013 that reframes the organization as the global leader in minority supplier development. Through a collaborative process that engaged all segments of our stakeholders, we redefined our brand identity as one of excitement – we are daring, imaginative and spirited in our unwavering commitment to our mission of advancing Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American suppliers in global corporate supply chain. As the year unfolds, this new brand identity will reveal itself in the form of a new NMSDC logo that is customized for each of the 24 affiliates, creating the look and feel of a true, synergistic network; a newly-designed website that utilizes the latest technology and navigation tools to interface with corporate members, MBEs and unique visitors to our website; and an integrated marketing platform that combines traditional marketing, social media and public relations to distinguish NMSDC as the world leader in supplier diversity and minority supplier certification.

Executive Summary

Promoting economic development in America's cities, creating lasting business relationships between corporate America and minority businesses, and building wealth in minority communities are all results of the work of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, Inc.® (NMSDC®). For more than four decades, NMSDC has demonstrated a commitment to meeting the procurement needs of Fortune 500 companies, universities, hospitals and government organizations. NMSDC has developed Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American businesses to build scale and capabilities and as a result, minority business is no longer synonymous with small business.

Minority businesses make up a significant and growing portion of America's economy, offering unique value to corporations and enhancing supply chains on a global scale. Approximately six million minority-owned businesses in the U.S. generate more than $1 trillion in gross receipts annually. In the five years between 2002 and 2007, minority business growth rates exceeded those of other firms. However, the economic challenges in recent years have served to highlight the progress yet to be made. Minority communities experienced the largest decline in wealth during the recession, and wealth gaps have risen to record highs. Likewise, corporate procurement requirements are changing, and businesses are looking to unlock new sources of value. There is still work to do.

As NMSDC looks to the future, its blueprint for advancing sustainable minority businesses in a global supply chain will be achieved through NMSDC's core capabilities:

  • Certify minority businesses and promote the value of certification
  • Develop stakeholders and build capacity and capabilities
  • Connect certified minority business entrepreneurs with NMSDC corporate members
  • Advocate for minority businesses and promote the value proposition of minority supplier development

Excellence in these capabilities is demonstrated every day across the NMSDC national network, comprising the national office and regional affiliates, where programs and services are designed, developed and delivered to members and MBEs.

This strategy is the blueprint for NMSDC's transformation, and the organization is poised to deliver unmatched value to its stakeholders and, in doing so, to global supply chains.
